When Rehab Centers Send You Running for Cover

Overcoming substance abuse is a long and gradual process, from the early days of intervention and detox through to the later stages of rehab and aftercare. The entire treatment process can be divided into a number of separate stages depending on the individual and substance in question, with each stage integral to the overall process. Medical detox is often administered at the outset of drug treatment, followed by inpatient or outpatient rehab and aftercare support systems. Before entering drug abuse treatment it’s important to do your research and choose a facility that meets your goals and expectations.

Warning Signs of Bad Rehab Centers

It’s important to be aware of certain warning signs when you choose an addiction treatment center. For example, lack of success stories or a bad reputation in the wider community is often a sign of underlying issues. Other warning signs may include poor client to counselor ratios, lack of accreditation, unjustified expenses, and lack of aftercare recovery programs. Worthwhile treatment programs are always translucent about their methods and costs, with well-respected facilities also willing to engage clients on a personal level in order to find the best drug addiction treatment possible.

The Importance of Accreditation

Access to trained and experienced support staff is crucial for anyone who is seeking to overcome a substance abuse problem. Before enrolling in a detox or rehab program it’s important to check for the appropriate accreditation. While certification and accreditation standards differ around the world, there is a clear set of guidelines in place within the United States. The highest accreditation is the JACO (Joint Commission Accreditation) standard, with the CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation representing the largest accrediting body for drug rehab centers. While accreditation doesn’t always ensure quality care, it’s a valuable measure to have when comparing rehab centers.

Not All Recovery Programs Are The Same

Substance abuse and addiction can be treated in many ways, from intensive medication regimes through to behavioral and spiritual programs. Before enrolling in a treatment program, it’s important to do your homework first and find a facility that works for you and your family. Most recovery programs are based on either pharmacotherapeutic or psychotherapeutic principles, with the former using medication therapies and the later using cognitive, behavioral, and motivational methods. While alcoholism, opiate addiction, and other physical dependence problems often require medical support, other forms of substance abuse can be effectively treated with psychotherapy alone.

Relapse Prevention and Aftercare Programs

While drug detox helps people to stop using drugs and rehab addresses the psychological undercurrents of addiction, further measures are also needed to ensure long-term recovery. Effective drug and alcohol treatment requires ongoing aftercare and relapse prevention systems in the weeks and months that follow formal rehab, with some people receiving treatment on an indefinite basis. Recovery from drugs and alcohol takes time and ongoing support, through 12-step facilitation, SMART Recovery, family therapy, individual counseling, sober living communities and more. Rehab centers may offer their own aftercare programs or work hand-in-hand with non-profit groups and independent operators.
